Giacalone Named Special Agent In Charge of NY Field Office Counterterrorism Division

On Aug. 15, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert S. Mueller III named John Giacalone special agent in charge of the New York Field Office's Counterterrorism Division. The new assignment makes him the supervisor of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, bringing together more than 300 investigators and other law enforcement officers from the FBI, New York Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

Giacalone spent the early 1990s investigating organized crime. He was a case agent for the investigation into organized crime's control of the airfreight industry at John F. Kennedy International Airport. In addition, he formed a task force in 1994 for the Garment Center Investigation that led to the arrests and convictions of 15 members and associates of organized crime.

In 2003, Giacalone created the Field Intelligence Group in Philadelphia, where he formulated a mission and operational plan, as well as directed 30 special agents, task force officers, analysts and professional support employees. Two years later, Giacalone was assigned deputy on-scene-commander in the Iraqi theater of operations.

In 2008, he worked as a member of the Attorney General Guidelines Task Force. While a part of the task force, he worked with 10 supervisory special agents to draft the FBI's new domestic investigative policy. Most recently, Giacalone has been serving as the section chief of the Counterterrorism Division's Domestic Terrorism Strategic Operations Section at FBI headquarters.

Giacalone holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Adelphi University and a Masters of Arts degree from the Naval War College.
