FLETC Opens $2.5 Million ICE Academy Classroom Complex

On Sept. 7, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), in conjunction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officially opened the ICE Academy complex at the FLETC headquarters in Glynco, Ga. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by ICE Director John Morton, as well as FLETC Director Connie Patrick. The facility is designed to train and prepare ICE special agents and officers to enforce immigration and customs laws. Its mission is to develop and deliver professional training programs to provide ICE employees with the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to be successful in ICE's national security and law enforcement missions. In addition, the ICE Academy gives ICE employees the change to take part in specialized training that is needed to perform investigations.

"With more than 20,000 employees in over 400 offices in the United States and around the world, ICE agents and officers play a critical role in protecting the security of our homeland," said Morton. "The ICE Academy at FLETC is a vital first step providing a strong education foundation to prepare our agents and officers to take on all types of law enforcement challenges."

The ICE Academy was a $2.5 million project to create a state-of-the-art learning facility. The three story building is comprised of four computer labs, nine classrooms, two electronic labs and two breakout rooms. Any excess classroom space will be used by other training courses being held at the FLETC Glynco site.

The FLETC is an interagency law enforcement training program that provides its services to over 90 federal agencies. During FY 2010, more than 65,000 students trained at FLETC centers. Prior to the renovation, in FY 2010, the ICE Academy trained almost 4,000 ICE employees in more than 30 different training programs.
Over the past forty years, since the FLETC was created, almost 1 million law enforcement officers and agents have been trained at the largest law enforcement training organization in the country. FLETC is headquartered in Glynco, Ga., but has sites in Artesia, N.M., Charleston, S.C. and Cheltenham, Md.
