Border Patrol seizes pot, arrests 9 smugglers

PHOENIX (KPHO) - 

Border Patrol agents seized more than 1,250 pounds of marijuana in three separate busts over the weekend in southern Arizona. The pot had an estimated value of $627,000.

A Chevrolet pickup truck was stopped Saturday by Casa Grande agents, who found more than 288 pounds of marijuana in a hidden compartment. Agents arrested the driver, a U.S. citizen.

On Sunday, Casa Grande agents operating a mobile surveillance unit found six backpacks with 341 pounds of marijuana in the west desert.  Agents searched the area and caught one person, a Mexican national, and seized an AK-47 semiautomatic rifle.

Also on Sunday, agents from the Ajo Station ATV unit caught and took into custody seven suspected drug mules, all identified as Mexican nationals by agents, and seized 626 pounds of marijuana about five miles east of State Route 85.
