More than $1 million worth of that was seized Tuesday near La Casita, Texas, by agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station. As they were patrolling near the Rio Grande, the agents saw several people loading bundles of marijuana into a pickup truck. As the agents approached, the vehicle sped away, at which time the agents used a tire deflation device to disable it. Once the smuggler’s vehicle came to a stop, he jumped out and fled into the surrounding brush. Inside the pickup agents found more than 1,300 pounds of marijuana.
Rio Grande City Station agents also hauled in more than 800 pounds of marijuana that same day near Escobares, Texas, after approaching a group of smugglers who were loading the contraband into a minivan. The smugglers fled but left behind nine large bundles of marijuana inside the van.
In all, more than 4,400 pounds of marijuana were seized by agents throughout the Rio Grande Valley Sector on Monday and Tuesday. The narcotics were turned over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation.
