New Computer Forensics Laboratory Opens in New Mexico

The New Mexico Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (NMRCFL) officially opened Tuesday at the University of New Mexico. The NMRCFL is the second facility of its kind to operate on a university campus and the 16th in the national network of full-service digital forensics laboratories and training centers.

"With nearly every criminal investigation now involving some form of digital evidence, there is great need for highly skilled digital forensics examiners," Louis Grever, executive assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Science and Technology Branch, which oversees the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory program, said. "With this flagship facility, and a shared commitment to providing the highest quality digital forensics to law enforcement, we will aggressively apply high-technology to solve crimes and keep our communities safe."

The regional computer forensics laboratory program began in 1999, offering digital forensics training and expertise to law enforcement for various types of investigations. The NMRCFL will feature a cell phone investigative kiosk that can be used to examine cell phones and handheld devices and a loose media kiosk to examine evidentiary data on CDs, DVDs and USB devices. The facility will be staffed with individuals from the FBI's Albuquerque Division, the Albuquerque Police Department, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico State Police and the University of New Mexico, FBI said.

The facility will be available to every law enforcement agency with jurisdiction in New Mexico, FBI said. To learn more about the NMRCFL, click here.
